About USC: Founded in 1801 and one of three public research universities in
South Carolina, USC spans an eight-campus, fully-accredited, state-assisted
system. It has a number of nationally recognized undergraduate and graduate
programs in Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Computing,
Medicine, Music, Business, Law, Education, Social Work, Pharmacy, Public
Health, Mass Communications and Information Studies, and Nursing.
Approximately 26,000 students are enrolled on the main campus in Columbia
and more than 40,000 throughout the system.

In 2006, USC joined the ranks of the nation's top research institutions in
the latest classification by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of
Teaching. USC has been designated a research institution of "very high
research activity", a designation granted to only 62 public institutions.
The campus research portfolio, which recorded expenditures of $210 million
during FY09, reflects sponsored programs from federal and state government
as well as a foundation and industrial support base. The University expects
to substantially increase the level of research activity in the near future.

Columbia is the state capital and the 73rd largest metropolitan area in the
United States. It has a rich historical and cultural tradition, excellent
schools, and is located within easy driving distance of both the mountains
and coastal beaches. The State of South Carolina is multicultural and is
recognized as a center for tourism and international trade and finance.
